What is "The Right Carb Diet"?
No smoke and mirrors here. The answer is simple: The diet that works for you.
I can wax poetic about the pros and cons of this level of carb and that level of carb, but the bottom line is that there are things in general that will work for us and then there are specific outcomes that are determined by any number of things: our genetic make up, environment factors, and how well we adhere to whatever program that we have aligned ourselves with.
So that we're on the same page, let's unpack what I mean:
Genetic make up: the factors that are pre-determined in our DNA. That's not necessarily fatalistic, but can be triggered by something (a virus, etc) so that your entire family may be predisposed to a condition (let's call it Condition X). While some members of that family get Condition X, some may have won the genetic lottery and didn't 'get' that gene, while others have the gene and yet don't succumb to Condition X.
Environment factors,: I'm not focusing on the 'climate change', but the immediate environment we find ourselves in. Are we in an office setting where well-meaning coworkers are constantly leaving out snacks for everyone to enjoy? Or are you so stressed and overworked that you find yourself stopping by a fast-food joint to pick up something because that is the only meal you'll have for the day? You cram the food down your throat and wash it down with soda only as a last resort so that you don't go home to bed starving?
How well we adhere to a program: We can kid ourselves, but numbers don't lie. When I spoke to someone recently about what they ate after dinner, they claimed nothing and yet I know they had a bag of chips (I saw it with my own eyes). Not the whole bag, mind you--but it was something–and definitely not 'nothing'. We kid ourselves silly with things like 'The crumbs at the bottom of the package don't count' or 'The cookie pieces aren't a whole cookie, so they don't count" or we cram and shove as much mac n' cheese into a cup and then create a generous mound on top and declare that is a one cup serving because it fit...right? Or do you ever weigh yourself at home after you strip down to your birthday suite? And if you don't, you might alot 2 or 3 lbs to the shoes and the clothes and whatever else you had on like your contact lenses or glasses?
You can try to fool yourself, but you can't fool your body.
So let's get back to the diet that works for you. What diet plan have you tried and gave an earnest effort that actually had results?
Let's try that again: What diet plan have you tried that actually had long lasting and hopefully permanent results?
So far, from all the diets I've tried, the ones that seem to impact my heath positively have incorporated some level of intermittent fasting, good fats, and unlimited vegetables with limits to the starchy carbs.
Yes, unlimited vegetables: this is the 'Right' carb in 'The Right Carb Diet'.
It's not low-carb, because, let's face it, vegetables are a carb. But it's not a starchy food like potatoes or rice.
And I have to state this loud and clear, I LOVE POTATOES! I LOVE RICE! I LOVE BREAD!
There, it's out. I'm not a closet carb lover. I am an out-of-the-closet, carb lover. I LOVE CARBS! I would shout it out on the rooftops if I could. I don't think there is a potato or rice dish in existence that I don't like. I like potatoes, rice, and bread so much that I even like it plain without fancy herbs or seasoning. Seriously, freshly baked bread is so irresistible! And pan-fried potatoes or a baked potatoes? And rice? Jasmine rice is so aromatic...
I'm salivating, just writing this. But starchy foods and I have a love/hate relationship thing going. I love it and it must hate me because it is wrecking havoc with my body.
20 years ago, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and have been battling it ever since.
2 years ago, I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 and have been battling this one as well.
Weight? Been battling that ever since I was a teenager.
My body is a war zone and I'm in it to win, now that I've done exhaustive research into why all the dozens of diets set me up for yo-yo dieting and actually lead me down the path of diabetes:
I was setting myself up for insulin resistance long before I showed clinical evidence of glucose in my blood sugar. I hadn't realized that sugar was already being crammed into all my organs and that once glucose is spilling into your blood–your organs are packed to the brim with the excess glucose where the liver has been storing it in order to keep your body in homeostasis.
Glucose where it don't belong is worse than an unwanted guest. It's a guest that is also a psychopath who destroys an otherwise healthy body.
